The McIver complex was built in 1923 in plain Italianate style and named for the late Brigadier General George Willcox McIver, who served as the commandant of the School of Musketry in Monterey, California, from 1907 until 1912. The School of Musketry is considered a predecessor to the School of Infantry, which originated as Camp Benning in 1918. McIver was responsible for developing marksmanship instruction and he authored the Army Small Arms Firing Manual.
The five two-story red-brick duplexes on McIver Street, commonly called “the McIvers,” are among the oldest homes on Fort Benning. They served throughout the last nine decades as family housing for NCOs, warrant officers and young Army officers. For more than 20 years, they were reserved for temporary lodging for high profile visitors and senior military leaders. Now Fort Benning families and their guests can reserve a historic one- or two-bedroom McIver suite just as they can reserve a stay at Uchee Creek or our resort in Destin, Florida.
