Community Service activities are planned in conjunction with
outside on- and off-post agencies. Many existing programs
contact us to provide volunteer support for their projects ,
which have proven to be worthwhile for everyone involved.
Soldiers acknowledge that volunteering their time and talents
makes a noticeable difference in their lives and in the lives of
others through their participation. All of our community service
projects provide the opportunity to spread awareness about the
BOSS program while demonstrating the outstanding character of
BOSS Soldiers. |
Baker Village Outreach Initiative
During the early 1940's
Baker
Village served as family
housing to Fort Benning Soldiers. It is now a housing project
located in South Columbus, just outside the Fort Benning gate. Generations of families live
within its boundaries, usually in the same complex next to one
another. Fort Benning Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers
(BOSS), Department of the Army civilians and volunteers from the
Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation make a positive
impact on this community by interacting with the children by
having fun playing kick ball, reading stories and educating them
that their world is not limited to Baker Village. We try to be
role models, build relationships and show them we care.
The Baker Village Outreach Program has grown significantly since
its inception in November 2004. Fort Benning Soldiers currently
conduct an event twice a month with the children or by visiting
residents at the Senior Center. Depending upon the event, all you
have to do is show up and have fun - it's rewarding for
everyone! Through dedicated people, we are trying to make a
difference one person at a time!

In
2005, the Department of the Army awarded the Baker Village "Kickball
and Story Hour" program second place for best ongoing community
service project. It continues to be one of
the most popular events
for everyone involved.

Muscular
Dystrophy Camp
Once a year,
children suffering Muscular Dystrophy spend a week at the MDA
Camp in Rutledge, Georgia. Fort Benning BOSS Soldiers serve as
camp counselors, giving undivided attention to individual
campers by assisting with daily physical and medical needs.
BOSS Soldiers help ensure every camper attends activities such
as horseback riding, swimming, arts and crafts, dances and much
more. "Honestly, this camp is the most arduous and tiring
community service activity I have ever done," said Staff Sgt. K.
Price, Fort Benning's current BOSS president. "I hope more
Soldiers will look into this worthy cause and join us next
year."

Our House
BOSS Soldiers
visit Our House, an emergency placement and assessment residential facility for children removed
from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Soldiers
work on a wide variety of projects and play games with the
young people. Currently we visit four times a year.

Girls, Inc.
The
Girls, Inc. organization helps young women accomplish
their dreams of better lives by giving them the social
tools, courage and experience. BOSS Soldiers help
show them another possible future by assisting with
field day and sports activities.
